Chapter 9: Defensive Carding and Bridge Rules
Defensive Carding
Upside-Down Count Attitude
Playing UDCA, low card is encouraged on the lead and high card is discouraged. A
doubleton is denoted by low-high instead of high-low. However on lead, still use high-low to
show a doubleton.
Odd-Even Discards
Odd-even discards is also called Roman discards. It is used when you cannot follow
the suit in the first time, odd card in a suit is encouraging and even card in a suit is
discouraging. A high even card means you like a higher of two suits not bid excluding trump,
a low even card means you like a lower of two suits. It is played against both suit contract
and notrump. A low even card means you like lower of two suits, excluding the suit lead.
Trump Suit Preference
Normally when declarer draws trumps, low-high shows an even number and high-low
shows an odd number of trumps holding.
Instead of showing count, we use to show strength outside the trump suit. Going up
the line shows strength in lower rank suit and a high-low shows strength in higher rank suit.
This we call Trump Suit Preference.
Reverse Smith Echo
To tell partner either to continue on opening lead suit or to switch to another suit, we
use reverse smith echo, not on the opening lead but on the declarer next playing suit
When declarer begin to run his own or dummy suit, a low-high signal from defender (opening
lead or his partner) the meaning as following
If made by partner of opening leader, it shows good support on the opening lead and ask
partner to continue the lead when regaining the lead.
If made by opening leader, it shows the suit led was strong and asks partner to continue
opening lead suit when gaining the lead.
In opposite way, when declarer begin to run suit, a high from defenders means as following
